The increase in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) as well as corporate restructuring activities is a sign of any maturing financial market. India is emerging as one of the hottest markets for M&A with the country recording close to 4,000 M&A transactions worth $220 billion since 2005. So not a single day passes without investment bankers and corporate M&A executives negotiating M&A transactions – bringing together companies whose synergies and core competences may make them formidable forces.

However, the real-world change of control is extremely complicated and is intricate in nature. Because they involve outright acquisitions, or breaking up of companies through spin offs and carve-outs. In brief, the role M&A plays on today’s corporate landscape is all about whether such activities ‘make sense’ for the companies concerned and whether the finer practices of investment banking, research & consulting, strategic planning and financing decisions will help organisations achieve their goals.
